Physical Therapy and Manual Therapy for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cervical Myofascial Pain and Headache | Chapter 7 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 8

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of manual therapy and physical therapy in the management and avoidance of cervical myofascial pain and headache in smartphone users (abusers). We were monitoring 69 patients with cervical myofascial pain and headaches in total. Aged 19 to 49, the patients had cervical spine posture (position) alterations but no significant cervical pathology. All patients utilised a mobile device in their daily activities for at least six months (at least two hours per day). Functional evaluation was done before, during, and after the treatment as well as one month after the rehabilitation was finished. All patients received a thorough physical treatment regimen that included massages, analytic paravertebral muscular exercises, post-isometric relaxation (PIR) for the sterno-cleido-mastoideus and upper trapezius muscles, as well as encouraging patients to take an active role in the preventative process (education in principles of back-school, self-massage, auto-PIR).and (in certain situations) manipulations are all included in the therapy strategy. We think that every physical therapist and doctor who specialises in physical and rehabilitation medicine has to alter the standard algorithm to accommodate each patient's unique needs.
