Hyperpigmentation: A Rare Presentation of Celiac Disease | Chapter 10 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 8

There is a wide range of symptoms associated with celiac disease, an immune-mediated enteropathy. Intestinal or extraintestinal manifestations are both possible. Although hyperpigmentation is a documented sign of vitamin B12 insufficiency, it is uncommon to exclusively have this symptom. We present a case of celiac disease with nutritional anaemia (iron, S. folate, and vitamin B12 insufficiency) and hyperpigmentation. At the time of presentation, our patient had no digestive problems. Her predilection for rice over wheat may have been the cause of the intestinal problems being covered up because she is from the eastern portion of India, where rice is a staple food. On B12 supplementation, hyperpigmentation was improved and reversible.
