Association of Socio-demographic Factors with Iron Deficiency Anemia among the Pregnant Women of the Poor Urban Population of Ajmer City, India | Chapter 13 | Recent Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 11

Background: So far, The most common cause of anaemia in pregnant women is iron deficiency anaemia. In terms of the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia among pregnant women, India outperforms all other countries. However, if left untreated, it can have a number of unfavourable consequences for both the mother and the foetus. A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted to determine the association between socio-demographic characteristics and anaemia among the target group's poor pregnant mothers.

The goal of this study is to discover the socio-demographic characteristics that are widespread among pregnant women in Ajmer's disadvantaged neighbourhoods, as well as to take appropriate efforts to address the root cause of anaemia in women of reproductive age, for a healthier and brighter future.

Materials and Procedures: A cross-sectional survey of pregnant women visiting Janana Hospital was conducted using a questionnaire. Anemia was discovered via secondary sources. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics.

The most afflicted ladies were between the ages of 20 and 30 years old on average. Anemia is exacerbated by an increase in the number of gravidas. Women's health is improved when they have a higher level of education. In terms of controlling anaemia, a non-vegetarian diet outperformed a vegetarian one. Women who married before the age of 20 were more prone to anaemia.

Conclusion: Socio-demographic characteristics play a role in determining when anaemia develops in pregnant women. As a result, the poorer parts of society are more likely to develop anaemia during pregnancy.
