Two Dimensional Ultrasonographic Analysis of Placental Maturity and Its Correlation to Gestational Age and Maternal Parameters | Chapter 2 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 12

The placenta, as a foetal organ, is exposed to the same stress and pressure as the foetus. As a result, any condition that affects the mother or the foetus has a major impact on the placenta. The goal of this study was to see how the placenta changes and grows as the foetus becomes older in the third trimester of pregnancy. The association between maternal factors (age and parity of the mother) and placental maturity was also investigated. The study included 100 pregnant women who visited the antenatal clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Queen Mary's Hospital, King George's Medical University, Lucknow, during their third trimester. There were no cases of obstetrical, gynaecological, medicinal, or surgical problems. The maturity of the placenta was determined. Grade 0, grade I, grade II, and grade III placental maturity were found to be 1 percent, 6 percent, 46 percent, and 47 percent of the time, respectively. Conclusion: There was a substantial variance in placental maturity grade among different gestational groups, as evidenced by the high p-value.
