Disparities in Social Development: An Inter-Block Level Study of Bankura District, West Bengal | Chapter 11 | Modern Advances in Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences Vol. 6

There are both spatial and chronological inequalities in the degree of economic and social development around the world, and development is dependent on the presence of some explicit drivers. Disparities in development are researched at several scales, ranging from global to local. The primary objectives of this research are to determine the extent of inter-Block discrepancy in social development in the Bankura District of West Bengal, as well as to identify the drivers and variables that contribute to this disparity. For this study, a total of ten social indicators were taken into account, with the Block level variation in development being calculated using the Development Index (DI). In terms of social development, the data clearly show vast difference among the Blocks. Nearly 10 Blocks in the eastern half of the District's plain lands have a reasonable level of social development, whilst 7 Blocks along the western plateau boundary have a low level of development. Lack of literacy, ignorance, uncomfortable communication, and unsustainable public plans are only a few of the acknowledged reasons that have contributed to social development disparities. To decrease disparities among the Blocks and provide a fair allocation of chances among social groups in the hierarchical structure, prompt adaption of appropriate solutions is sought.
