COVID-19 Reinfection and Its Diagnostic Approach | Chapter 12 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 2

COVID-19, which is caused by the Coronavirus strain "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARSCOV-2)," has posed a serious threat to the world, and its pandemic has become the most pressing worry in health-care systems. Patients have been reported to have re-infected with the virus after being discharged. Various investigations have found a lack of reporting of COVID-19 virus in asymptomatic cases of reinfection. SARS-CoV-2 is genetically different, ruling out chronic viral shedding or reactivation. Because there is no technique for diagnosing reinfection based on a single specimen, it is recommended that paired specimens be tested for reinfection diagnosis. To reduce the spread of the virus in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) have taken specific preventative measures. The increase in knowledge, as well as guidelines, has been proposed as a preventive intervention in the country to combat COVID-19. To fight the problem, a protocol for reinfection diagnosis is required. After a few cases were researched so far with an Indian scenario, this is a review article to study the diagnostic technique and diagnostic criteria for reinfection. These patients' whole genome sequencing provides important evidence for reinfection.
