Food is essential for growth and
development. Food that can be served ready to eat fast is termed
fast food. Junk food and fast food are
often used interchangeably. Energy dense food with high sugar,
fat or salt content and low nutrient
value in terms of protein, fiber, vitamin and mineral is junk food.
Many children are fond of such food.
Sponsorship of sports or cultural competitions with attractive
gifts plays important role in promoting
fast food sale. Nuclear family, working mother, socioeconomic
status, nearby fast food shop, food test
and quick service in shop are important factors behind fast
food consumption. This food is
responsible for health hazards including obesity, diabetes,
hypertension, dyslipidemia and heart
disease. Availability of healthy food with reasonable price, its
campaign, school mid-day food programme
and education on food and nutrition can improve dietary
habits. People should abide by the
dietary guideline recommendations for children. Implementation of
laws for regulation of food marketing
along with other measures may control fast food consumption by
children.
