The utilisation of laparoscopic techniques for inguinal
hernia repair has been increasingly adopted in clinical practice. The
Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) and Total Extraperitoneal (TEP) approaches
are the predominant procedures employed for the treatment of primary,
recurrent, and bilateral inguinal hernias. These techniques, however,
necessitate specialised equipment and training, and they present a significant
learning curve. This article aims to examine the advantages and disadvantages
of the TAPP and TEP repair methods. Furthermore, we will compare these
laparoscopic techniques with traditional open inguinal repairs and explore the
role of robotic-assisted inguinal hernia repair.
