Carrageenan, a chemical produced from the red algae Kappaphycus alvarezii, is one of the substances that can be created as a raw material for pharmaceuticals or excipients. This red algae species was chosen as the subject of study because, in addition to having a high carrageenan content, it can be found in abundance in the waters of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study began with the collection, washing, and processing of red algae, followed by carrageenan extraction using a modified extraction method. Because the percent RSD of both the repeatability and reproducibility calculations does not exceed 3%, the carrageenan extraction method using a technical ethanol precipitator and pro-analytical ethanol meets the repeatability and reproducibility precision requirements because it meets the Horwitz standard of a maximum RSD of 3%. To get carrageenan raw materials, the extracted products were separated, filtered, and dried. The products were then physically and chemically examined, as well as spectrophotometry and chromatography, to guarantee that the carrageenan obtained fulfilled the quality standards as excipient raw materials in pharmaceutical formulations. The results showed that the raw material from Kappaphycus alvarezii red algae meets Indonesian National Standard (SNI) quality criteria, and the carrageenan produced meets Food Agriculture Organization (FAO), Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), and European Economic Community quality standards (EEC).
