Study on Crystal Growth and Characterization of an Organic Nonlinear Optical Material: An Approach to L-histidinium Maleate (LHM) | Chapter 6 | Research Trends and Challenges in Physical Science Vol. 2

L-histidinium maleate, a new amino acid organic nonlinear optical material, was successfully produced from aqueous solution using a slow solvent evaporation approach in this study. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the structural arrangement of the generated crystal. The chemical composition of the formed crystal was determined using energy dispersive X-ray analysis. 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectral investigations were used to determine the molecular structure of the formed crystal. The proportion of optical transmission by the formed crystal was determined using UV–visible spectral analysis. Using the Tauc relation, the band gap of the formed crystal was calculated from the optical absorption spectra. The powder technique of Kurtz and Perry was utilised to determine the nonlinear optical properties of the produced material. HR-SEM examination reveals the surface shape of the formed crystal. The thermal stability of the formed crystal was confirmed using differential thermal analysis.
