Evaluation of Varied Forms of Constant Metopic Suture in Adult Dried Skulls of South India | Chapter 3 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 9

Metopism refers to the persistence of the frontal suture that connects the two frontal bones in adults, and the suture is known as metopic suture. Metopic suture fusion begins around 18 months after birth and is completed by the age of 8-9 years. The two frontal bones fuse together as the metopic suture unites, as seen in adult skulls. In some adult skulls, constant metopic suture can be present in whole or imperfect forms. This aspect of skull anatomy variation appears to be on the rise in the modern period. Knowledge of this unusual anatomy could be crucial in domains such as forensic medicine, where it could serve as a distinguishing trait. In adult skulls, complete metopism occurs when the metopic suture extends all the way to the bregma, the point where the sagittal and coronal sutures meet. Incomplete metopic sutures take on many shapes, such as a 'V,' 'H,' 'Y,' or 'U,' which might be mistaken for hairline fractures in radiological findings. The glabella, a bony protrusion at the root of the nose, is commonly found with incomplete metopism. The goal of this study is to see if there is metopism in adult South Indian skulls in various forms. The presence of metopic suture was investigated in 180 adult skulls ranging in age from 40 to 65 years old from the department of Anatomy. Their dimensions and forms were recorded. The findings were compared to those of previous studies. There were 103 skulls with no metopic suture, 9 skulls with complete metopic suture extending from glabella to bregma, 18 skulls with 'V' shape, 14 skulls with 'H' shape, 16 skulls with linear metopic suture in the midline, 7 skulls with 'Y' shape, 11 skulls with inverted 'U' shaped metopic suture, and 2 skulls with 'U' shaped metopic suture with These figures clearly suggest that metopism is becoming more common. To summarise, 42.5 percent of skulls showed various kinds of metopic suture, while 57.2 percent showed no metopism.
