A Brief Review on Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Brick Kiln Workers | Chapter 1 | Issues and Development in Health Research Vol. 7

Musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs) have become a relatively frequent ailment. Brick kiln employees are not immune to the effects of MSDs. Workers in these industries are unaware of ergonomics and health issues, which exacerbate existing MSDs. The goal of this study is to give a summary evaluation of existing knowledge concerning musculoskeletal diseases in brick kiln workers by exploring the literature using health care databases and assessing it using critical appraisal tools.

The literature was combed via using a variety of search engines and databases. Google Scholar, Pub Med, and Science Direct were utilised as search engines, and databases such as COCHRANE, CINHAL, MEDLINE, and PEDRO were used as databases. Electronic (databases, electronic libraries, electronic journals, Google Scholar) and print sources were used to collect the information (Journals, Textbooks, Hand searching, Follow-up reference).

The title, author, year, and study design of each article were tabulated. The database search resulted in the discovery of 150 publications and reports. The titles and abstracts of these papers were screened. Full text screening was performed on 57 papers, with 13 articles being eliminated because they did not offer information on the prevalence of musculoskeletal problems among brick kiln workers. As a result, the review comprised a total of 44 papers.

Conclusion: Brick-making is a multitasking activity in which different people are involved in different processes. Not to mention that all of the brick-making manufacturing procedures take time and are certain to happen. Furthermore, workers in such businesses are illiterate, with little to no awareness of ergonomics or health issues, which adds to the already existent MSDs. To avoid or lessen the risk of developing WMSDs in brick kiln employees, they must use correct equipment such as wheel barrows, trolleys, and frequent breaks, as well as get proper ergonomic training and health education.
