Autologous Hemotherapy in Treatment of Polymorphic Eruption of Pregnancy | Chapter 05 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 17

A benign inflammatory illness associated with pregnancy is polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP), also known as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP). The pruritic polymorphic lesions appear in the abdominal striae with the periumbilical area being spared. The cause of this ailment is unknown. We enrolled eight women with polymorphic pregnancy eruption in our investigation. The effectiveness of various therapy options was evaluated.

The participants were split into two groups at random. Group 1 received conservative treatment with systemic corticosteroids and antihistamines until delivery, while Group 2 received autologous hemotherapy intramuscular injections. The efficacy of conservative therapy was quite poor in Group 1 (37.5 percent, n=3). Patients had severe pruritus as a result of the recurrent pathological skin lesions. An intramuscular whole blood autologous hemotherapy was employed in Group 2 (62,5%, n=5) at weekly intervals. Pruritus improved in 2 days on average, and skin abnormalities faded in 10-15 days after commencing the therapy. According to the findings, intramuscular autologous hemotherapy should be evaluated as a viable alternative therapy with a favourable safety profile for both the mother and the kid.
