Periodontitis is a disease that affects the periodontal tissues and causes them to degenerate. Clinical or surgical interventions are widely recognised as critical steps in the restoration of periodontal tissue health. Newer biomaterials have enhanced the variety of treatment options available and improved the long-term prognosis of periodontal diseased teeth. Biomaterial science is the synthesis of physical and biological aspects of material science. Biomaterials are materials that are bioinert, bioactive, or bioresorbable. The discipline of material science has progressed tremendously, from macro particles to nano particles. They're made of organic or inorganic materials and come from either vital or non-vital bone sources. The majority of these biomaterials have structural, mechanical, and biofunctional limitations, and patient characteristics such as age, defect size, and compliance influence their performance. This chapter examines the significant advancements in biomaterials and their use in periodontal care.
