Uterine Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Rare Gynaecological Presentation | Chapter 18 | Recent Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the vaginal tract are uncommon, and uterine corpus engagement is not only uncommon but also devoid of pathognomonic signs and symptoms, resulting in delayed identification and treatment. This led the publication of a case report of a multiparous lady who had recurrent vaginal bleeding and growing abdominal enlargement, which was initially misdiagnosed as uterine sarcoma. She had a total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy in a private institution by a gynaecologist and general surgeon after a surgical surgery that was initially inoperable in a secondary facility. The histological investigation of the specimens removed led to the diagnosis of high-grade big B-cell type non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the uterus. However, her condition worsened, and she died of numerous organ failures before chemotherapy could begin. The problems in diagnosis and management in a resource-constrained situation where modern diagnostic aids are not easily available were also highlighted in this paper. Although uterine non-Hodgkin lymphoma is uncommon, any patient with an abdominal/pelvic tumour and/or atypical vaginal bleeding should be evaluated.
