Study on the Effect of Micropolar Fluids on the Squeeze Film Elliptical Plates | Chapter 02 | New Visions in Science and Technology Vol. 7

On the basis of Eringen's micropolar fluid theory, this work elaborates on the theoretical analysis of squeezing film properties between elliptical plates lubricated by non-Newtonian micro-polar fluid. Micropolar fluids, a subclass of micro fluids that exhibit micro-rotational effects and micro-rotational inertia, can support only couple stress and body couples. The modified Reynold's equations governing micro-polar fluid flow are mathematically derived, and the result reveals a film pressure distribution that determines the dynamic performance characteristics in terms of load and squeezing time for various values of coupling number and micro structure size parameter. Based on the findings, the impact of non-Newtonian micropolar fluids on increasing approach time and load carrying capacity compared to a conventional Newtonian lubricant is investigated. In the presence of micro-polar fluid, the squeeze film properties of elliptical plates are considerably changed.
