Breast cancer is a serious health issue that affects people all over the world. Despite the fact that breast cancer is currently the most common cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer mortality in women in our environment, result indices in impoverished countries have remained poor.
The goal of this study was to identify the primary barriers to effective breast cancer patient care outcomes in our centre.
Methods: From January 2016 to December 2017, the case notes of all histologically confirmed instances of breast cancer that presented to our centre were evaluated. A proforma was used to extract data on the variables of interest.
The case notes of fifty-five (55) patients were reviewed. They were all females. Early disease affected 30.9 percent of the patients, while advanced disease affected 67.3 percent. Invasive ductal carcinoma was found in 76.4 percent of the patients. On the left and upper outside quadrants, there were more lesions. Six cycles of chemotherapy were completed by 46 percent of the 37 patients with advanced cancer who needed it. Radiotherapy was not given to any of the patients who needed it. At the two-year follow-up, just 1.8 percent of those who needed hormone therapy were still on it. Alcohol, oral contraceptives, and cigarettes were used by 3.6 percent, 11 percent, and 0 percent, respectively. At two years, 81.8 percent had been lost to follow-up, and 14.5 percent had died while on admission.
Conclusions: The key barriers to a good result for this disease are late presentation with advanced disease, low compliance and adherence to treatment methods, and limited access to adjuvant therapy, according to this study.Author(S) Details
