Resource Recycling for Enhancing Farm Productivity and Profitability in Integrated Farming System under Rainfed Situation in Odisha, India: A Recent Study | Chapter 09 | Current Topics in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 2

From April 2010 to March 2013, the current study was conducted in a 0.8 ha rainfed farm with two water sources: no pond/rainfed and pond/irrigated in five different blocks: Khajuripada of Kandhamal district (North Eastern Ghats Zone), Dhenkanal Sadar and Odapada of Dhenkanal district (Mid Central Table Land Zone), Golamunda and Narla of Kalahandi district (Western Undulating Zone) of Odisha The Rice Equivalent Yield (REY) in the Integrated Farming System (IFS) model farm was 31.92 q, compared to 3.78 REY in the conventional rice-greengram system. The net return in the IFS model was Rs. 1,61,148/-, whereas the conventional system yielded Rs. 11,631/-. In the IFS model, recyclable wastes of 3.3 t paddy straw, 3000 kg pond silt, 2129 kg poultry excreta, and 13 t mushroom were used as resources for various components. The efficient recycling of wastes increased the productivity and profitability of IFS models. Almost no trash was left to damage the environment or degrade the resource base, whereas waste in traditional systems was not properly utilised.
