Disseminated Cutaneous Rhinosporidiosis : A Rare Case Presentation | Chapter 1 | Recent Developments in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 8

Rhinosporidiosis is a granulomatous infection of the mucous membranes that causes polyposis in the nasal mucosa, conjunctiva, and other parts of the body. The infection is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. Since 5 years, a 71-year-old man has had multiple cutaneous painless nodular lesions over the right side of his belly, left shoulder, back, and medial aspect of right thigh. He had previously had nasal surgery to correct a blockage. A potassium hydroxide mount and histological examination revealed the picture of cutaneous rhinosporidiosis. This case demonstrates that papillomatous skin lesions combined with pharyngeal lesions should be suspected of widespread rhinosporidiosis.
