Determination of Pollination Ecology and Fruiting Behaviour in Strychnos nux-vomica L. (Loganiaceae) | Chapter 14 | Current Topics in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 2

Strychnos nux-vomica has small, greenish-white flowers that are bisexual, nectariferous, and have a light sweet odour. They are open in the evenings and provide pollen and nectar to guests. Pollinators include bees, flies, wasps, butterflies, beetles, and birds. The two main species, Apis dorsata and Euploea core, undertake diurnal visits between 7.00 and 17.00 hours. At 16.00-16.15 hours, the anther dehiscence begins. At 17.30-18.00 hours, the capitate stigma is sensitive to pollen germination, and it remains receptive one day after full anther dehiscence. The breeding system is a hybrid. Cross-pollination is preferred by flowers (29.78-60.26 percent), however selfing is also feasible (17.94-39.74 percent ). Floral biology, reproductive phenology, mating system, and pollinator results will be extremely useful in designing breeding plans for both genetic improvement and natural conservation.
