Application of Artificial Intelligence Control of HVDC Transmission System | Chapter 6 | Recent Advances in Mathematical Research and Computer Science Vol. 3

AC power transmission is not cost-effective across long distances to handle large amounts of power. The high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system is chosen as the best option not only in terms of cost, but also in terms of reliability. However, choosing the appropriate control strategy for HVDC links under diverse operating situations is a difficulty for designers. PI controllers have traditionally been employed for HVDC system rectifier current control, however due to fixed proportional (P) and integral (I) gains, these controllers can only operate adequately within a narrow working range. However, when operating a nonlinear plant, such as the firing angle of the rectifier side in an HVDC system, model controls, such as fuzzy logic controllers, outperform classic PI controllers in terms of dynamic disturbances. The CIGRÉ model, which is a traditional technique, has been investigated and found to increase the stability of an HVDC system.
