Acquired Pure Red Cell Aplasia in a Patient of Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Case Report | Chapter 01 | New Frontiers in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 17

Pure red cell aplasia is a clinical disorder characterised by the absence of mature erythroid precursors in another wise normocellular bone marrow (PRCA). PRCA is an extraarticular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis that is a relatively uncommon cause of anaemia in Rheumatoid Arthritis, with only a few cases reported to date. Hereditary and acquired PRCA are two types of PRCA.

We look at the example of a 52-year-old woman who had long-term untreated seropositive arthritis and severe symptomatic anaemia. After a complete work-up that included a bone marrow exam, her findings were consistent with pure red cell aplasia.
