A Case Report: Mucocele of the Sphenoid, Ethmoid and Frontal Sinuses Presenting with Proptosis, Visual Impairment and Diplopia | Chapter 4| Research Trends and Challenges in Medical Science Vol. 7

The paranasal sinus mucocele is the accumulation inside the sinus of mucoid secretion caused by obstruction of the sinus ostium. Occasionally, proptosis, diplopia and visual impairment are present. Cerebral abscesses or meningitis are occasionally present. It is more common in the frontal sinuses, less common in the ethmoid sinuses, and less common in the sphenoid sinuses, which make up less than 2% of all mucocele sinuses in the paranasal sinuses. A case of paranasal sinus mucocele with proptosis in the right eye, diplopia, vision impairment and headache have been identified. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a polyp in the right anterior ethmoid sinus and the mucocele of the sphenoid, ethmoid and right frontal sinuses resulted in the nasal cavity. To avoid intracranial and intraorbital extension and its complications, early diagnosis and prompt management are of utmost importance. In order to determine the extent of the mucocele, MRI is the best process. In the separation of mucocele from Sino nasal tumours, contrast enhanced MRI is beneficial.
