One of the essential commercial crops is cotton. India is the world's largest producer of cotton with a growing area of 120 lakh hectares and 365 lakh bales. An experiment was undertaken at Dry Farming Research Station, Junagadh Agricultural University, Targhadia (Rajkot) during Kharif 2017-19 on "Effect of recycling cotton stalks on yield and yield characteristics of cotton under dry farming conditions" on medium black clayey soil. The experiment was laid out with three replications in the strip plot style. Five key plot treatments are included in the experiment: S1- Elimination of cotton stalks from the plot, S2- Surface burning of cotton stalks, S3- Inclusion of cotton stalks Using rotavator, S4- Incorporation of cotton stalks using mobile chopper and S5- Ex-situ composting of cotton stalks using shredder and three sub plot treatments viz.; D1- One decomposting irrigation, D2- One irrigation + addition of N @10 kg/ha through urea + compost culture @ 5 kg/ha, D3 - Addition of N@ 10 kg/ha through urea + compost culture @ 5 kg/ha at sowing, so fifteen treatments combine Maximum seed cotton production (1875 kg/ha) was reported by the stalk management practise S5 (Ex-situ composting of cotton stalks using shredder). In comparison, the influence of decomposting methods on yield characteristics and seed cotton yield was found to be non-significant. However, under de-composting practise D11, the maximum seed cotton yield (1823 kg/ha) was reported (one irrigation for de-composting). The effect on seed cotton yield of decomposting practises was found to be non-significant. Maximum seed cotton yield was provided by stalk management practise S5 (ex-situ composting of cotton stalks with shredder) and decomposting practise D1 (one irrigation for decomposting).
