Effect of Elevation and Land Use Systems on Phytosociology of Shrub and Herbage Vegetation in Indian Central Himalayas | Chapter 8 | Cutting-edge Research in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 4

Natural land use structures (LUS) are the basis of the life and economy of the people of the Himalayas. In the watershed, the phytosociology of herbs and shrubs along the elevation gradient was studied (2B4D6). Five elevations were classified into the watershed, i.e. <1100 m, 1101-1400 m, 1401-1700 m, 1701-2000 m and >2000 m. For the analysis of LUS vegetation, six parcels of size 10 m x 10 m (shrubs) and six quadrats of size 50 x 50 cm (herbage) were randomly laid out. The herbage density (11.3 percent) and basal area (18.5 percent) were significantly higher in grassland (Gr) compared to silvipasture (SP) LUS. Similarly, as opposed to SP LUS, the density of Gr shrubs (48.9 percent) and basal area (36.8 percent) was substantially higher. In LUS, both the density and basal area of shrubs and herbage decreased along the altitude. The dominance of herbage species changed with elevation in Gr and SP LUS. Compared to Gr in SP LUS and along the altitude gradient, the decrease in basal area and density could be attributed to altered environment in herbs and shrubs. To understand the changes in phytosociology in various LUS and along elevation, the analysis may be worthwhile.
