Estimation and Assessment of Productivity and Economics of Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) – based Intercropping System under Rainfed Conditions of North Saurashtra Agro-climatic Zone of Gujarat | Chapter 4 | Cutting-edge Research in Agricultural Sciences Vol. 4

 In order to study the productivity and economics of cotton-based intercropping systems under rainfed conditions of three distinct agroecological situations in the North Saurashtra Agro-climatic Region of Gujarat, field experiments were conducted at three distinct locations, Dry Farming Research Station Jamkhambhalia, Dhari and Nanakandhasar during 2001-2002 to 2004-2005. The experiment was performed in a randomised block design with seven therapies consisting of six intercrops, groundnut, soybean, blackgram, cowpea, greengram and cotton sesame in 1:1 row proportion additive sequence and sole cotton 'G. Cot. Cot. Hy, hy. 8 '(120 x 30 cm), repeated three times. The pooled three-year results over locations showed that due to intercropping with some intercrops, seed cotton yield was not significantly reduced. With intercropping of oilseed crops (23.76 to 26.91 percent), sole cotton reported a comparatively higher seed cotton yield (888 kg/ha) and a decrease in seed cotton yield was higher than pulse crops (7.88 to 18.80 percent ). Among intercrop yields, non-significant differences were noticed. However, intercropping cotton with sesame (1503 kg/ha) followed by greengram (1287 kg/ha) yielded significantly higher seed cotton equivalent yields of 69.25 and 44.93% over sole cotton (888 kg/ha), respectively. In terms of net returns (Rs.20744/ha and Rs.15389/ha) and B:C ratios (2.51 and 2.06), higher monetary advantages were also obtained relative to other intercropping systems and single cotton (Rs.8057/ha and 1.65). Based on the findings, it could be concluded that farmers growing hybrid cotton (G.Cot.Hy.-8) at a distance of 120 cm in the North Saurashtra Agro-climatic Zone are advised to follow an intercropping system with sesame (G.Til-2) or green gramme (K-851) in a row ratio of 1:1 for higher yield and net yields under rainfed conditions.
