During 2010-11, field investigations were carried out in the best farmer-managed coconut gardens located in different agro-ecological units (AEUs) of Kerala, India. The goals were to determine coconut production capacity, evaluate the yield difference between best and popular coconut gardens managed by farmers, and establish a coconut nutrient management plan based on best management practises for farmers to minimise yield disparities. Using stratified random sampling, a total of 53 high-yielding coconut gardens located in 17 Kerala AEUs were found and analysed. The production capacity of coconut ranged in AEUs from 60 to 250 nuts-1 year-1 palm. Onattukara Sandy Plain, Northern Laterites, Southern Laterites and Southern Coastal Plains with yields respectively of 250, 208, 180 and 180 nuts/palm/year were AEUs with high production potential. Kole Plains, Wayanad Central Plateau, Kuttanad and North Central Laterites with returns of 60, 86, 100 and 110 nuts/palm/year were AEUs with low output potential. In AEUs, the yield difference ranged from 36 to 987 percent. The proposed coconut nutrient management plan aimed at reducing yield difference consists of adding 1 kg of burnt lime, 60 kg of green leaf manure and farm yard manure, 1 kg of Factamfos, 0.5 kg of potash muriate, 1.5 kg of common salt, 0.5 kg of magnesium sulphate and 50 g of borax to each palm every year to farm composting with organic manure.
