The European illicit drug market is being flooded by new dangerous substances with unknown synthetic chemical structures or structures of identified companies that have been modified to escape prosecution. Over the past few years, hundreds of synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic phenylethylamine / cathinones or drugs of very uncommon occurrence have been confiscated by the authorities, which is considered to be only the tip of the iceberg. These substances are advertised as legal highs, mostly legally distributed via internet systems and, in particular, consumed as party drugs by very young people. In the following article, their mechanisms of action, the dangerous side effect profile and possible drug-drug interactions, in particular with antiretrovirals, are discussed.
