Growing Pea (Pisum sativum L) as Relay Crop with Monsoon Rice: A Resource Conservation Technology in Eastern Indo-Gangetic Flood Plain Soils of Bangladesh| Chapter 13 | New Perspectives in Agriculture and Crop Science Vol. 3

The study was conducted during rabies 2011-2012 at Pulses Research Centre (PRC), Ishurdi, Pabna, Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur and Pulses Research Sub-station (PRSS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh to pick an enhanced pea variety as a relay crop with monsoon rice for well adaptation and higher yield as a green pod for vegetables. Since peas are rich in starch, protein and dietary fibre as a food portion, they have significant amounts of vitamins and minerals and are characterised by a relatively high antioxidant activity that has a cholesterol-lowering impact. BARI Motorshuti-1, BARI Motorshuti-3, IPSA Motorshuti-1, IPSA Motorshuti-2, IPSA Motorshuti-3, central and local Jhikorgacha Natore and five pea varieties for the location of Jamalpur Viz. BARI Motorshuti-1, BARI Motorshuti-3, IPSA Motorshuti-1, Natore Local, Jikorgachha Local and only Natore Local and Jikorgachha Local for Joydebpur were included in this experiment as a treatment. The result revealed that at Ishurdi, Jamalpur and Joydebpur locations, the Natore local variety gave the highest pod yield of 5,318 kg ha-1, 4,825 kg ha-1 and 2,200 kg ha-1 respectively, followed by the local Jickorggacha variety. Gross maximum margin of Tk. 1,52,836 hectares-1, Tk. 1,45,809 & Tk ha-1. At Ishurdi, Jamalpur and Joydebpur places, 44,840 ha-1 and BCR 4.04, 4.65 and 2.21 were obtained from the local Natore cultivar. Similarly, the Natore local cultivar, along with improved production technologies, also showed satisfactory yield levels and economic performance in the field of farmers. It was also found that lands under pea cultivation could be brought under pea cultivation by the inclusion of peas in the monsoon rice field to increase pea production, provide human nutrition and also ensure soil health improvements for a sustainable production system.
