Scientists are especially interested in the hydrogenation of substituted pyridines, because the resulting functionalized piperidines are the most important intermediates in the synthesis of both natural products and pharmaceuticals. The difficult methodology for the hydrogenation of substituted pyridines with a mild reduction catalyst PtO2 in glacial acetic acid as a protic solvent using clean atmospheric hydrogen below 50 to70 bar is stated to lead to the synthesis of piperdine derivatives. 1H NMR and ESI-MS have characterised all the hydrogenated compounds. Protic solvent was sufficient for the decreasing poisonous character of pyridine derivatives and increasing the catalytic activity against the PtO2 catalyst, then the selection of glacial acetic acid.
