Portuguese Literature and Film: Ideological and Symbolic Metamorphosis in Manhã Submersa: From the Novel by Vergílio Ferreira to the Film by Lauro António | Chapter 2 | Modern Perspectives in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 1

In his novel Manhã Submersa, the Portuguese writer Vergílio Ferreira devotes profound attention to the treatment of space, which acquires a powerful symbolism and results in a vector for the creation of the identity of the main character. Room, physical and psychological, because of the influences and echoes in the personality, is very important for the internal growth of the main character. The director Lauro António, who adapted the novel to the cinema, often used space as an important element for the character 's narrative and characterization, using different methods from the novel, however. The dynamic network of ties between literature and film represents these changes and carries along the idea of adaptation, its meaning and conceptual boundaries.
