Mucuna pruriens, commonly known in India as Kaucha, is well-known for its neuroprotective and aphrodisiac properties and has been widely used since ancient times in the Indian Ayurveda System for the preparation of herbal formulations and tonics. Compared to other legumes, Mucuna seeds have a higher amount of L-Dopa and is a promising medication in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, the second most common neurodegenerative condition. The present report focuses on highlighting information on wild mucuna germplasm collected from various geographical regions of India and checked for higher plant growth, seed yield and seed L-Dopa material. For breeding, superior lines were further employed and 69 F1hybrids were produced. Three (3) promising selections have been shortlisted for commercial cultivation with white coloured seed characteristics by back cross lines, Weighing 72-114 gm/100 seeds, yielding 424-810 gm seeds / plant and > 4.5 percent L-Dopa content. Medium-bold in scale. Carbohydrates, protein , fat and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium and sodium have been tested for the nutritional status of selected 3 lines. Agronomic practise in South Gujarat has been standardised for cultivation. Maximum economic yield (seed yield) was observed with plant spacing of 1 * 1 metre (1.9 metric tonnes / hectare) and 1 * 1.5 metre (1.3 metric tonnes / hectare) with chemical fertiliser level 150:40:0 kg NPK or bio-fertilizer treatment (T4) with commercial product Biopline+Phosphurt plus N: P: K of 100:60:40 kg / hectare and individual plant support (6-8 foot high bamboo poles) method. The harvesting stage was also fixed-up and semi-dried pods were harvested and further drying was carried out under shade.
