An Update of the Situation about the Protection of Inventions Derived from Plant Research in a Megadiverse Country: The Case of Mexico | Chapter 2 | Trends in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol. 5

This paper discusses the current situation in Mexico, a nation rich in plant species, regarding the poor security of industrial land. In addition, indigenous peoples have used plant species medicinally, and significant research is also being carried out on plant products. The security of industrial property remains a problem that has recently been implemented into the Mexican economy. The lack of a federal science and technology policy appears to be a key factor in growing the filing of patents and encouraging the transition of technologies to technology, as well as protecting natural resources. Possible steps and outlines that could lead to creating a better situation for the involvement of patenting procedures were also addressed, in particular with regard to the defence of innovations that can be extracted from conventional knowledge of plants. All proposals may be useful to place Mexico in a position to be a competitive country with the potential to confront society's current challenges. Government , industry, research institutions, inventors and society must actively engage in the development of a patent culture that ensures the preservation of patentable information produced and gives impetus to technology, the creation of employment, the protection of natural resources and social and economic benefits, which is the very basis of a patent: an agreement between inventors and the go-ahead.
