Anti-inflammatory and Anti-leukaemic Activities of the Kigelia africana Stem Bark, Fruit and Leaf Extracts | Chapter 1 | Trends in Pharmaceutical Research and Development Vol. 5

 Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases currently ravaging and destroying humans and even animals, and exerts its high range of pathophysiological effects through the uncontrolled and irregular growth of cells that occur at various sites of the body. Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow that affects the haemopoietic compartment of stem cells due to somatic DNA mutations. Owing to their multiple associated side effects and cytotoxicity, various cancer treatment attempts with the use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy have not shown functional advantages in patients. Several plant-derived anticancer agents are now renowned around the world for their medicinal use because they do not affect normal body cells, and one of these is the Kigelia africana plant. Kigelia africana is an anticancer agent with countless beneficial therapeutic properties against cancer cells and microbial infections. Its ethanol extracts from stem barks, fruits and leaves have anti-leukaemic properties and mitigated the related chronic disease and thrombocytopaenia anaemia when administered orally to Wister rats following benzene exposure. Therefore, it is recommended to characterise the different sections of Kigelia africana plant extracts in order to evaluate their bioactive components as a potential promising natural , non-toxic anticancer agent.
