Much attention has recently been drawn to the production of solid rocket boosters for the so-called enhanced capacity development of Northrop Grumman's Airforce and national aeronautics and space administration. However, this growth has not only proven to be a major financial burden, but it is also technically unsound. In a recent test of a solid rocket booster in Promontory, Utah, one such result was seen. Booster suffered catastrophic failure towards the end resulting in blast and complete destruction of the exit cone despite initial successful start-up. An attempt has been made in this short case study to summarise the findings made during the test and the potential explanations. However, it is unknown what the impact of this evaluation would be on the actual start date of the scheme, which is already considerably delayed in an organisation whose current output is unsatisfactory and is very uncertain in the future.
