Investigating the Sign Language and Speech Translation Wearable Device with Android Application for Special Education Schools in the Philippines | Chapter 2 | Recent Developments in Engineering Research Vol. 6

In order to provide bidirectional communication assistance for speech and hearing impaired (HI) students, the Sign Language and Speech Translation System via Smartphone with Android Application (SignSpeak) using a Wearable Device was developed. The wearable device (glove) will be connected to the smartphone with the installed application through Bluetooth, and while wearing it, it will translate the sign language gestured by HI students into speech. The device was checked by HI and non-impaired students and teachers of one of the public SPED schools in the Philippines and also served as respondents to the survey carried out. The results obtained suggested that the translation scheme of distinct gestures and speeches in sign language was effective and reliable. In general, for all speech and hearing impaired individuals, this would be a modern communication device.
