This book provides a comprehensive and integrated
exploration of how strategic leadership, ethical governance, and sustainable
practices converge to transform procurement and supply chain management (SCM)
into a driver of competitive advantage and long-term value creation. It
addresses the increasing expectation for procurement leaders to move beyond
cost-focused functions to become champions of organisational strategy,
sustainability, and stakeholder trust. The book is in five interconnected
sections.
Section A – Introduction: The book opens by framing
procurement and SCM as strategic pillars that influence organisational
performance, innovation, and resilience. It establishes the importance of
leadership in setting vision, defining priorities, and ensuring alignment
between procurement activities and broader corporate goals. The introduction
also outlines the central themes of the book: Strategic leadership, sustainable
procurement, managing relationships, business policy, and ethics in the supply
chains.
Section B – Strategic Leadership in Procurement Management:
Drawing on transformational leadership theory, stewardship theory, and
contingency theory, this section examines how procurement leaders inspire,
guide, and adapt to dynamic market conditions. It explores the leader’s role in
vision-setting, fostering organisational culture, and driving change through
innovation and collaboration. Emphasis is placed on decision-making agility,
risk responsiveness, and aligning procurement strategies with long-term
business objectives.
Section C – Managing Strategic Commercial Relationships in
Procurement and Supply Chains in Practice: This section focuses on the
practical aspects of building and sustaining strategic supplier partnerships.
It discusses relational governance, trust-based collaboration, joint
problem-solving, and co-innovation. It provides real-world examples of how
organisations achieve competitive advantage, operational efficiency, and supply
chain resilience through proactive supplier relationship management and shared
sustainability goals.
Section D – Business Policy and Ethics for Procurement
Professionals: Ethics is positioned as a foundational element of sustainable
procurement practice. This section delves into ethical sourcing, compliance with
regulatory frameworks, and integration of ESG (Environmental, Social,
Governance) considerations into procurement policies. It addresses
anti-corruption measures, transparency, and accountability mechanisms that
enhance credibility with stakeholders. The interplay between business policy
and moral responsibility is explored, showing how ethics underpins long-term
organisational trust and performance.
Section E – Conclusion: The book concludes by synthesising
the interconnectedness of leadership, relationship management, ethics, and
sustainability. It emphasises that procurement is no longer a back-office
function but a strategic engine that shapes competitive positioning and social
responsibility. By adopting visionary leadership, fostering strategic partnerships,
embedding ethical policies, and committing to sustainability, organisations can
achieve resilience, adaptability, and long-term stakeholder value. The message
is clear: the future of procurement leadership is strategic, ethical, and
sustainable.
