Studying the Effect of CO2 Laser Treatment on the Fabric Hand of Cotton and Cotton/Polyester Blended Fabric | Chapter 5 | Current Perspectives on Chemical Sciences Vol. 4

Fabric hand has been identified as one of fashion textiles' most significant efficiency attributes. It is described as "perceived complete aesthetic quality of fabric." The consistency of the textile content is experienced primarily by touching and has a direct effect on the appeal of the product. The effect of laser treatment on the hand properties of cotton and cotton/polyester blended fabric using the PhabrOmeter method is compared in this paper. Five fabric hand characteristics were obtained, namely stiffness, smoothness, softness, wrinkle recovery rate, and drapability, and it was shown that laser treatment could be used effectively to improve the hand of the fabric. The fabrics were found to have enhanced drapability and wrinkle recovery after laser treatment in the case of pure cotton woven fabrics. After laser irradiation, stiffness was found to be comparatively higher in cotton/polyester blended fabrics. Results obtained for the hand properties of the fabric show that laser treatment can be used effectively to improve various aspects of fabrics, including stiffness, smoothness, softness, drapability, and recovery of wrinkles.
