An Experimental Approach to Enhanced Oil Recovery by Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide Injection Followed by Low Salinity Water Flooding for Tight Carbonate Reservoir | Chapter 14 | Advanced Aspects of Engineering Research Vol. 2

Due to the rise in demand for oil and gas, which can not be equalized by primary production or secondary production methods, Enhanced Oil Recovery techniques are one of the top priorities of technological advancement in the petroleum industry today. The key purpose of the EOR process is to transfer oil through the injection of various fluids into the production wells to supplement the natural energy present in the reservoir. In addition, these injection fluids may also assist in altering the reservoir's properties, such as lowering IFTs, altering wettability, modifying pH, creating emulsions, migrating clay and reducing oil viscosity. The goal of this experiment is to investigate the recovery of residual oil by combining the effects of gas injection followed by low salinity water injection for reservoirs with low permeability. This is achieved by a series of flooding tests on selected tight carbonate core samples taken from the Abu Dhabi Zakuum oil field using, first, low salinity water as the base case and injection of nitrogen & CO2 followed by low salinity water flooding under pressure and temperature reservoir conditions. The experimental results showed that the nitrogen injection followed by a low salinity water flood with a recovery factor of approximately 24 percent of the residual oil achieved a substantial improvement in the oil recovery.
