Emphasizing the Parametric Study of Effects of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment on the Wettability of Cotton Fabric | Chapter 4 | Current Perspectives on Chemical Sciences Vol. 4

Wettability plays a very important role in improving processes such as dyeing and printing in the manufacturing of textiles. Although the well-prepared cotton fabric has very good wettability, the subsequent dyeing and printing processes can be effectively improved by further enhancing its wettability. Plasma treatment, especially atmospheric pressure plasma treatment (APPT), which is a continuous process, is now attracting industry interest. In this analysis, we investigated the effect of APPT on the wettability (in terms of wickability and wetting area) of cotton fabric under four operational parameters: (1) discharge power; (2) oxygen flow rate; (3) jet travel speed; and (4) jet-to-substrate distance. Experimental findings showed that, in affecting the wettability of the cotton fabric, the four parameters communicate with each other. Generally speaking, in terms of wickability and wetting area, the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment may further improve the wettability of cotton fabric. Experimental findings show that, in terms of their impact on the wettability of the cotton fabric, operational parameters interact with each other. This study therefore provides important technical details and knowledge for the application of plasma atmospheric pressure treatment in textile manufacturing.
