Piracy is the copying and dissemination of recordings of a piece of music for which no permission has been granted by the legal owners (composer, recording artist or copyright owning record company). It is certainly not a normal phenomenon, but a deliberate misappropriation of the fruit of the labour of another man (Adewopo,[1] http:/en.m.wikipedia.org > wiki[2]). This paper discusses the severity of the "piracy" crime , particularly in their markets, in the Eastern part of Nigeria. The adverse impact it has on the intellectual property rights of the persons involved have also been exposed. It planned, circulated, compiled and evaluated a 20-item questionnaire. The impact showed that it had far-reaching effects for both the people and the government of our nation. Several tactics have been proposed that would help fight piracy, including the institution of civil litigation, legislative enhancement, public relations / enlightenment, etc., among others.
