A Novel Approach to Etymological Research: The DELPo Experience | Chapter 8 | Modern Perspectives in Language, Literature and Education Vol. 1

The aim of this paper is to present the working methodology and the key theoretical postulates that direct the preparation of the DELPo (Etymological Dictionary of the Portuguese Language) under the responsibility of NEHiLP-USP (University of São Paulo Center for the Support of Research in Etymology and the History of the Portuguese Language), as it relates to an innovative project both in its theory and in its history. The conceptual, notational and terminological innovations suggested by the authors that help the preparation of DELPo are intended to be discussed here. To this end, we depend on theoretical references to neology, lexicogenesis, and etymology and propose an update on the symbology used in the formulation of etymological propositions which, at the same time, can explain the ambiguities and contradictions of the traditional notation and respond to the conceptual innovations presented here. Both the mentioned etymological processes and the symbols are supposed to be corresponding to them become standard in the research in etymology and etymological lexicography.
