A new and more sensitive method for the determination of carbaryl pesticide, carbaryl, has been produced from different environmental samples. Carbaryl supplies 1-naphthol for its alkaline hydrolysis, which is further clarified in an alkaline medium with diazonium salts of 4-bromoaniline. By coupling the pesticide with DBA, a yellow dye is obtained. The maximum absorption of the yellow-colored dye produced is measured at 517 nm. Over the concentration range of 0.5 to 8.0 μg mL-1 of carbaryl in a final volume of 25 mL, beer law is obeyed. Sandell's sensitivity and molar absorptivity were found to be 6.71 ⁇ 105 L mol-1 cm-1 and 0.0301 μg cm-2 respectively. In order to optimize the reaction conditions, some variables were studied. The experimental results show that the basic interferences produced by other pesticides and non-target ions can be removed by the technique, making the process more sensitive. The reagent provided a new, simple and highly sensitive method for the determination of carbaryl in various geological and environmental samples. It is a temperature independence method and stability of the colored product are the added advantages. This method has been successfully applied for the determination of carbaryl in water, soil, rice, vegetable and various outdoor environmental samples.
