The World Health Organization has declared the ravaging coronavirus a pandemic (WHO). Its spread and mortality rates are troubling. There is no solution yet to exacerbate matters, but clinical trials are on-going. The only safeguard to minimize the effects of the pandemic is to stick to the precautionary measures outlined by health experts for developing countries such as Nigeria: physical distancing, wearing facemasks, using sanitizers, improving personal hygiene and avoiding social gatherings. If the effect is to be reduced or contained, COVID-19 data needs to reach all Nigerians regardless of their position or level of literacy. Nigeria is a multilingual society, so information on COVID-19 must be made accessible to all language groups, especially those in rural areas. This paper addresses the dissemination by translation to rural dwellers of knowledge on COVID-19. The Igbo people in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria are the subject here. The paper discusses translation and terminology, then proceeds to provide the Igbo version of such words associated with COVID-19, using various term development methods such as equivalence, composition, naturalization, idiomatic expressions and explanatory modulation. With these, it is possible for rural Igbo speakers to grasp what COVID-19 is all about, the potential risks and the precautionary steps to be taken to reduce mortality. Some proposals have also been made to promote the containment of the pandemic.
