Arithmetic Modelling and Routing Algorithms for an Edge–Fog–Cloud Continuum Structured as a Full k-ary Tree | Chapter 7 | Mathematics and Computer Science: Research Updates Vol. 9

Remote computing is currently widely deployed in production networks, although its performance could be optimised through an appropriate architectural design. Accordingly, a mathematical model of an edge-fog-cloud hierarchy is presented, where all devices are organised as a full complete k-ary tree. When devices across layers are sequentially indexed, integer division and modular arithmetic can be used to determine the devices and ports involved along the path between a source and a destination end device. Two pseudocode algorithms are proposed, where one considers only a single cloud server, while the other extends the approach to multiple cloud servers. The key properties of both algorithms are simplicity and scalability, highlighting their technical relevance in remote computing architectures. The proposed model may have a practical impact on IoT, edge AI, and network design as it simplifies how packets are forwarded between end devices in remote computing environments.

Real-Time Object Detection via Cloud-Enabled Deep Learning: A Systematic Review | Chapter 6 | Mathematics and Computer Science: Research Updates Vol. 6

Automated vehicles, advanced surveillance systems, AR, and robots are just a few of the many new uses for real-time object recognition.  While deep learning models are becoming increasingly complex and accurate, they might be challenging to execute on edge devices with limited resources due to the computational demands. By offloading computationally intensive processes to scalable cloud infrastructure, cloud-enabled deep learning enables real-time processing without sacrificing detection accuracy, offering an effective alternative.  This study takes a close look at the current setup of cloud-based object recognition methods that work in real time. When considering latency, bandwidth, privacy, and processing costs, the pros and cons of several architectural paradigms are evaluated, including hybrid methodology, distributed inference, and edge-cloud cooperation. Additionally, the developments of lightweight convolutional neural networks (CNNs), single-shot detectors, and model compression techniques are examined, all of which are aimed at real-time performance in cloud environments.  Improving fault tolerance, optimizing data transmission, safeguarding data security and privacy, and developing more adaptive and efficient cloud resource management strategies for dynamic real-time object detection contexts are all areas that could be further explored in this review.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Cloud Computing for a Hybrid Work Model in the Post COVID Era | Chapter 9 | Current Approaches in Engineering Research and Technology Vol. 7

The narrative of work has changed globally since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020 till date. The Work from Home (WFH) model which took various businesses time to effectively adapt became popular following the lockdown of over 9 months globally. The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Sector was not left out. Organizations that could adapt however recorded significant operational cost savings with the WFH model and continued with a hybrid work model after the relaxation of the lockdown. With either the WFH or the hybrid work model, the combination of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Cloud Computing technologies became unavoidable by AEC firms for effective collaboration and seamless productivity. This study examines the role of BIM and Cloud Computing in successfully implementing a hybrid work model for AEC firms. It also examines the readiness of firms to operate the hybrid work model and the possible barriers to its successful implementation. Quantitative data was gathered from registered architectural firms using a close-ended structured questionnaire. Using a simple random sampling method, a total of 140 survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Relative Importance Index (RII). Findings revealed that the utilization level of the cloud-based file storage and sharing system within the BIM work process is still very low among firms with less than 20% of the respondents actively operating on a cloud-based server. The study also revealed high BIM setup and maintenance cost as the greatest barrier for firms in transitioning to a cloud-based system with a mean score of 4.74 and an RI value of 0.95. The study recommends greater awareness of the cloud server system amongst firms’ top-level management for increased financial investment for daily operational cost savings that the hybrid work model offers.

An Extended Ameliorated Round Robin Algorithm in Cloud Computing for Task Scheduling | Chapter 7 | Mathematics and Computer Science: Contemporary Developments Vol. 4

Cloud computing is a cutting-edge technology that provides a variety of services on demand. Due to the substantial volume of requests received from cloud users, it is crucial to manage these requests efficiently. As such, task scheduling becomes a vital aspect of cloud computing. The allocation of computational resources within the cloud is managed by cloud providers, highlighting the necessity for designing high-efficiency scheduling algorithms compatible with diverse computing paradigms.

This chapter introduces a new method for task scheduling in cloud computing called the Ameliorated Round Robin Algorithm (ARRA). The proposed algorithm enhances the traditional Round Robin approach by developing an optimal time quantum based on the average burst time of tasks. This is achieved through both fixed and dynamic methodologies, allowing the algorithm to adapt to varying workloads more effectively.

The chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the ARRA, demonstrating its superior performance through experimental results. These results indicate that ARRA significantly outperforms existing algorithms, such as Improved Round Robin (IRR), Enhanced Round Robin (ERR), Dynamic Time Quantum Approach (ARR), and Enhanced Round Robin with RAST (RAST ERR). The improvements are evident in key performance metrics, including average waiting time, average turnaround time, and response time.

By optimizing these metrics, ARRA not only enhances the efficiency of task scheduling in cloud computing but also contributes to better resource utilization and user satisfaction. This chapter delves into the technical details of the ARRA, provides comparative analyses with other algorithms, and discusses the implications of these findings for future research and practical applications in cloud computing environments.

Design and Development of Patient Monitoring System in Healthcare Using Cloud Computing Environment: A Review | Chapter 5 | Contemporary Perspective on Science, Technology and Research Vol. 8

This paper focuses on review of Design and Development of Health-care Patient Monitoring System using cloud environment. Cloud computing technology combines with the (IoT) Internet of Things concept and helps for maintaining and processing of vital data on-line instead offline. In traditional method of patient monitoring the patient’s physiological information is on paper recorded by the nurses. As these nurses work on shift basis the latest details of the patient may not be completely explained from outgoing to incoming nurse. Many times the diagnosis is made based on manually recorded physiological information and the prescription was noted without concern with tolerant current medical records. With such conventional method diagnoses as well as the recommendation are noted against the law, which does not permit to do experts to have an easy entry to tolerant record. With such scenario it is bit difficult to diagnose the patient correctly for the proper treatment. This leads to the expansion of store and ahead at least under ICU environment. With such system the patient’s normal functioning in the form of space-time records of biological event are seize, stored for as long as to the experts for unplugged.

This study aims to develop advanced Real time telemedicine system by using an ultra-low power processor and low power biomedical sensors. This proposed work tries to facilitate population living in rural as well as interior part of the country with portable battery operated Telemetric unit and to provide flexibility to such patients to have distant medical checkups as well as continuous patient monitoring. This study also shows methodology and basic idea about how the sensors, actuators connected to processor which able to process the signal in proper graphical physiological parameters of patients displayed on monitor by Java Programming technique later its connected to wireless sensor network then sent to web server to the experts present on another side. During this COVID-19 pandemic situation, biomedical healthcare Monitoring System is very helpful for those patients where vehicles, transportation and continuous monitoring is necessary.

A Brief Overview on Memory Management and Reuse Mechanism for Virtual Machine in Cloud Computing to Minimize Energy Consumption | Chapter 8 | Research and Applications Towards Mathematics and Computer Science Vol. 8

In this paper, a propose technique that reduces the size of memory image stored on source host before migration. Cloud computing is an emerging computing technology for large data centers that maintains computational resources through the internet, rather than on local computers. The ultimate goal of efficient resource utilization in cloud computing is to maximize the profit for cloud providers and to minimize the cost for cloud consumers. Virtual Machine (VM) migration provides the capability to balance the load, system maintenance and fault tolerance, etc. However, existing migration techniques, used to migrate virtual machines keeping memory images of VMs in host and skipping transfer of unchanged memory pages to reduce the amount of transfer data during migration, if number of migrations increases, number of memory images stored on host are also increased, this causes memory starvation. When a VM migrates to other host, memory images of VM is kept in the source host after removing unwanted data according to the Probability factor. When the VM migrates back to the original host later, the kept memory image will be “reused”, i.e. data which are identical to the kept data will not be transferred and comparative to existing system the size of memory image is small. To validate this approach, evaluate the results using different threshold levels and probability factor of change in data. Proposed system required less memory to store the memory image and allow more VMs to be hosted. Specifically, proposed work is used to improve resource efficiency throughout by reducing the size of memory image that is stored on source host. The current work focuses on efficient memory management for source host and will reduce the memory requirement while migration. The main idea behind this concept is, whenever a VM is ready for migration from one host to another, its current state is stored on source host for future use to reduce the data transfer when it come back from the destination host after processing.

A Cost-effective 2-tier Security Paradigm to Safeguard Cloud Data with Faster Authentication: A Recent Study | Chapter 02 | Novel Perspectives of Engineering Research Vol. 9

Recent technological advancements have propelled cloud computing (CC) infrastructure to new heights, with increased research focusing on cost-effective storage management. Due to the potential distributed and pervasive storage facility, it is inefficient in fully preserving the integrity of user data attributes. As a result, the collaborative sharing of user data creates a situation in which various security flaws emerge. Consumer data is obtained in the cloud by cloud service providers who can be trusted or untrustworthy. Various security protocols have been observed in the past that attempted to solve this similar problem with cryptographic solutions, but they lack computational sustainability and robustness. As a result, the study introduces a two-tier framework that provides enhanced access control and storage security for Virtual Machines (VMs). The research essentially improves the model's performance by hastening the authentication process. The system's performance has been compared to industry-standard encryption standards. In terms of processing time, time to generate a secret key, and key size for encryption, the results show that the proposed solution outperforms existing security standards.
