Clinico-pathologic Study of Hemangioma of the Oral and Maxillofacial Region | Chapter 11 | Medical Research and Its Applications Vol. 8

 

Background: Oral and maxillofacial hemangioma is a benign vascular tumor that develops due to endothelial cell proliferation and occurs in and around the oral cavity. It consists of an abnormal overgrowth of tiny blood vessels. Hemangioma may not be present at birth but may appear at 6-month of life. It is a rare vascular tumor.

 

Objective: To present the clinical presentation, modalities of treatment and surgical outcome of hemangioma of the oral and maxillofacial region.

 

Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of all the patients that were treated from January 2009 to December 2023. Information was extracted from case files of patients. Data collected included: age at presentation, sex, location of the tumor, treatment given, findings and histological diagnosis.

 

Results: Twenty- six cases of hemangioma were seen in the oral and maxillofacial region during the period of study. Twelve (n=12, 46.2%) were males and fourteen (n=14, 53.8%). Male to female ratio was 1.0 to 1.2. Cheek (46.2%) was the commonest site of occurrence, and the floor of the mouth was the least (3.8%). The age ranged from 4 months to 39 years. Our diagnostic tool was the aspiration of frank blood from the tumor which had similar clotting time with the normal blood and our mode of treatment included: injection of sclerosants and excision of the fibrous tissues.

 

Conclusion: It is essential to treat the tumor as early as possible especially in large lesions with disfigurement or where it is complicated by hemorrhage or infection.

Oral Cancer Frequency at Different Sub Sites of Oral Cavity: A Study from Tertiary Care Hospital of Karachi, Pakistan | Chapter 13 | Medicine and Medical Research: New Perspectives Vol. 3

 

Introduction: Carcinoma of oral cavity is amongst the first ten commonest malignancies in Pakistan. Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common intra oral site manifesting as a chronic, indurated ulcer. Oral cavity sub sites include lips, gum, floor of mouth, mucosa of cheeks, vestibule, anterior two third of tongue, retro molar trigone, hard and soft palate and uvula these sub sites show a variation of trend, onset of cancer. Causes are Aerica nut, tobacco and low consumption of alcohol in our society as compared to developed part of the globe.

 

Objective: The primary objective of the study is to determine the frequency of oral cancer in sub sites of oral cavity.

 

Subject and Methods: This was a cross sectional study that took place in Ear nose throat, Head and Neck surgery Department, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Jinnah Sind Medical University Karachi, for four years, from 1st January 2013 to 1st January 2016. A total of 105 patients having chronic oral ulcer of three months or more duration, growth in oral cavity, either gender reporting for treatment at ENT JPMC OPD were registered for the study. Detail like sub site oral lesion, technique of sampling like punch biopsy to be done by expression biopsy and Histopathological reports were entered.

 

Results: Squamous cell carcinoma is the predominant type of oral cancer and tongue is the commonest site of origin for these cancers. The average age of the patients was 48.52 ± 5.24 years. There were 61% male and 39% were female. The commonest sites involved were cheek mucosa, lips, tongue, gum with (36.2%), (25.7%), (20%), (18%) respectively.

 

Conclusion: Cheek mucosa is the commonest site of oral cancer with middle age group and male predominance. These results are similar to previous studies with acceptable differences in proportions and common sites involved. However, most of the studies have shown male predominance and middle to old age involvement. Based on these findings, inferences, strength, and limitations, it is recommended to organize further epidemiological studies with large sample, multiple settings and objectives to reach a firm conclusion.

Dry Mouth: Understanding the Causes and Effective Treatment Options | Chapter 7 | Medical Science: Recent Advances and Applications Vol. 6

Saliva is the fluid that is always present in the human’s oral cavity. It is composed of water, mucus, mineral salts, proteins, and amylase. It assists in the lubrication of the oral cavity, mastication, swallowing, and protection of the mouth and teeth. The salivary glands make, modify, and secrete saliva. These glands may be affected by wide spectrums of pathology, ranging from developmental anomalies and inflammatory disorders which may be acute or chronic and lead to hyposalivation and xerostomia. Dry mouth affects geriatric patients but can also be seen in young people. The aim of this review is to investigate the underlying causes of dry mouth (xerostomia) and evaluate effective treatment options to improve patient outcomes. A search of English-language scientific literature from 1989 to 2025 was conducted using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. The criteria focused on reports about xerostomia, its diagnosis, effects, and treatment, with inaccessible or duplicate reports excluded. Hyposalivation can be caused by age-related changes, systemic diseases, radiotherapy, certain medications, infections, lifestyle habits, and autoimmune diseases. Each of these factors can affect saliva production and composition, leading to dry mouth symptoms. Dry mouth can be managed through endogenous approaches, like pharmaceutical or genetic modifications, and exogenous approaches, like topical saliva substitutes. Artificial saliva substitutes typically contain water, electrolytes, and other ingredients to lubricate and protect the mouth.

Evidence from an In vivo Study of the Prevalence of Trichomonas tenax and Entamoeba gingivalis in Periodontal Disease Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy | Chapter 4 | Advancement and New Understanding in Medical Science Vol. 3

Aim: The purpose of this research was to compare normal people to those undergoing chemotherapy for periodontal disease and to determine the effect of the oral bacteria Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax. Then determine the parasites' pathogenicity by studying them in live organisms.

Materials and Methods: The research included 80 participants: 30 patients with periodontitis who visited the AL-Karama dental clinic, and 20 patients undergoing chemotherapy who were sent to the national center of hematology at Mustanasiriyah University in Iraq. In addition, the remaining 30 people were seen as a control group with healthy teeth and gums. Gum scrapings were promptly microscopically inspected using two methods: a wet-mount smear and a Giemsa-Romanovesky stain. As part of the experiment, the positive samples were cultivated on specific cultures and then applied to the gingival margins of three groups of rats, one of which was given an immunosuppressive medicine and the other two did not. This process was repeated for each parasite.

Results: Entamoeba gingivalis is more common in periodontitis patients (36.7% greater frequency), according to the data. Chemotherapy patients had a 30% greater frequency of E. gingivalis and a 10% higher frequency of Trichomonas tenax compared to the control group, whereas the percentages for the other two bacteria were 15% and 3.333%, respectively. There was no death, inflammation, or ulceration in the control group, but all rats in the first group that dealt with E. gingivalis developed periodontal ulcers; two rats in the second group died after 10 days; one rat in the third group had mild gingival inflammation but was otherwise healthy; and all rats in the fourth group dealt with T. tenax were still alive and had healthy gingiva.

Conclusion: Periodontal individuals had elevated E. gingivalis frequencies, according to these results. Frequencies were greater in the treatment group compared to the control group. People undergoing chemotherapy may develop a harmful infection caused by In Vivo Entamoeba gingivalis.

The Significance of Oral Fusobacterium nucleatum in Female Breast Cancer: A Brief Overview | Chapter 2 | Research Developments in Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 4

Adverse Changes in the Oral Condition of Adolescents and Long-term Computer Use| Chapter 16 | Current Innovations in Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 5

A Brief Review on Oral Manifestation of Respiratory Disorder | Chapter 16 | Current Practice in Medical Science Vol. 2

The current review provides some information on the major respiratory illnesses and their oral symptoms. Many systemic illnesses and abnormalities initially manifest in the mouth. Therefore, a prompt diagnosis by a dental expert might result in a prompt referral to the appropriate healthcare physician. The oral cavity is clinically and/or therapeutically involved in many pulmonary disorders, including respiratory obstructive diseases, systemic diseases with pulmonary involvement, lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, and tuberculosis. This highlights the significance of routine dental visits, a thorough oral cavity examination, and active collaboration between dental professionals and pulmonologists. To diagnose pulmonary disorders early enough for patients to benefit fully from treatment, oral symptoms are frequently necessary.

Use of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) in the Treatment of Traumatic Ulcers Case Report | Chapter 6 | Highlights on Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 10

 A specific sort of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is produced in Southern Italy, namely in the countryside of northern Bari in Puglia, from the cultivar "Coratina." It is distinguished by a high level of polyphenols and other biocoumponds, which is the greatest among cultivars.

In the Mediterranean diet, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a must-have ingredient. Furthermore, the oil was used to treat a variety of ailments by the ancient populations of southern Italy, including burns, injuries, hematomas, dermatitis, and so on. Despite the fact that various studies on EVOO have demonstrated its amazing effectiveness in wound healing, no scientific research for the treatment of traumatic ulcers in the oral cavity have been offered.

We recommend the use of EVOO as a therapy in therapeutic treatment as a viable alternative to pharmacological treatment in this clinical instance.

Oral Cavity - A Potential Repository for Early Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Asymptomatic Carriers | Chapter 12 | Challenges in Disease and Health Research Vol.3

 The new Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has become a worldwide health emergency. The early diagnosis and successful isolation of patients is the key cause of concern among the health authorities, as the present influenza is very close to the old common flu in its initial clinical appearance. Real Time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRTPCR) is currently considered to be the gold standard for the identification of the causative virus, SARS-Cov-2, but in the meantime, it takes time and poses the risk of further spread to the exposed individuals , especially healthcare staff. Social distancing is also the only way known worldwide to avoid the spread of the disease and to keep isolating, screening and acting on individuals with clinical symptoms. Asymptomatic carriers, however, are the next point of concern and need mass screening that is not feasible with rRT-PCR per se. Researchers are trying to create a way out for the Detection of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in asymptomatic carriers or in patients who are incubated, thereby eradicating the spread of the disease and flattening the virus multiplication curve. As stated in the literature on salivary research, early detection of a related virus during the outbreak of SARS was found to be encouraging. This paper is an attempt to emphasise that, due to its anatomical relationship with the salivary glands, naso-oro-pharynx, and the mucosa that are gradually filled with saliva, the oral cavity may be a possible reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 both in the incubation process and/or convalescence time. Samples of saliva are easy to obtain and possibly make it an excellent method for mass screening, thereby promoting the early detection and prevention of further spread of the deadly From a pandemic.
