Advancements in Early Disease Diagnosis Using FTIR Spectroscopy of Body Fluid | Chapter 5 | Achievements and Challenges of Medicine and Medical Science Vol. 13

Because of the rising incidence of infectious diseases in the twenty-first century, point-of-care diagnostics are desperately needed. A popular analytical method for examining the vibrational signatures of organic substances is FTIR spectroscopy. It has been used in a wide range of biomedical sectors in recent years due to its ability to identify the molecular structure and content of different biological materials without the usage of probe molecules. Severe shortages in reagents and testing kits have significantly impacted testing for suspected parasite, bacterial, fungal, and viral illnesses. Infrared spectroscopy has been used increasingly to characterize biological matrixes, providing a simple way to obtain diagnostic and observational information from easily acquired samples to monitor some modifications and finally to describe a biological matrix to detect earlier alterations that can generate diseases. Infrared spectroscopy is becoming increasingly useful in the field of biomedical research. This focal point chapter will demonstrate how Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy can identify disease markers in bodily fluids, and significant analytes that are suggestive of illness. This chapter presents some recent applications of the infrared spectroscopic technique published between 2020 and 2025.
