Monitoring the Performance of Exclusive Bus Lanes in Chennai | Chapter 14 | Emerging Trends in Engineering Research and Technology Vol. 11

A bus lane is a lane that is used to prevent traffic congestion and is provided exclusively for bus operations. The new bus transit system in Chennai, known as the METROPOLITAN TRANSPORT CORPORATION (METROPOLITAN TRANSPORT CORPORATION), accommodates approximately 4 million transport units, enough to accommodate a growing number of passengers. Buses must share the lane with other vehicles, affecting their capacity, speed, reliability and service quality. Traveling during peak hours in major cities has become unattractive due to traffic congestion. In this text, an attempt was made to include lanes only for the operation of buses. For the study three arterial roads were selected linking Kelambakkam to Sholinganallur, Chennai central to Tambaram, Vandaloor zoo to Tambaram. Volume of Traffic In these places, a survey was performed. Painted lanes are not very successful and the purpose is served by lanes divided by barriers. Suggestions are proposed for exclusive bus lanes for the chosen area where traffic congestion is greater during peak hours, based on the survey performed and research completed. It also increases the level of service and the well-being of travellers. Road protection can also be easily taken care of as well.
