In a national cross-sectional sample of Saudi girls and adolescents, the purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and health-related physical activity (HRPF). Methods: In three age groups [(8-10), (11-12) and (13-15) years], weight, height and four components of HRPF (body fat composition, strength and endurance, flexibility and cardio-respiratory fitness) were assessed. The relationship between BMI and HRPF in the three age groups was tested by the Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis using a non-linear quadratic model. Performance: Variable relationships between tests were exposed in the results. Higher body mass indexes in each age group were correlated with lower scores for body fat composition and cardio-respiratory fitness. In girls aged from 11 to 15 years, lower muscle strength and endurance scores were also reported. Between age groups, the relationship between BMI and versatility varied. Conclusion: individual HRPF was significantly and differentially affected by BMI, but the effects differed with age. In general, higher body mass indices have been correlated with lower HRPF. The HRPF level calculated by this study may serve as an indicator of the potential health risks faced by girls and adolescents with overweight and obese children.
