Study on Optimal Location of FACTS Devices by Evolutionary Programming Based OPF in Deregulated Power Systems | Chapter 8 | Theory and Practice of Mathematics and Computer Science Vol. 4

 In order to reduce transmission line congestion in the deregulated power system, this paper introduces an Evolutionary Programming (EP) approach to solving the optimal power flow with the Versatile Alternating Current Transmission (FACTS) unit. Protection and stability restrictions restrict the amount of electric power that can be transferred between two places through a transmission network. One of the technical problems, particularly in the deregulated setting, is congestion on the transmission lines. Private power producers are growing rapidly in the deregulated power industry in order to meet rising demand. The goal of the transmission network is to pool power plants and load centres in order to provide the load with the reliability, maximum efficiency and lower costs needed. When power transfer increases, with unscheduled power flows and greater losses, the power system becomes increasingly more difficult to operate and dangerous. The goal of FACTS devices is to regulate the flow of power so that it flows through the specified routes, to increase the capacity of the transmission line to its full thermal limit, and to improve the protection of the transmission system with minimal investment in infrastructure and environmental impact. An emerging FACTS system used in this paper to minimise congestion is the Thyristor Controlled Series (TCSC) capacitor. The suggested method introduces output index parameters to optimally locate TCSC for congestion relief. The goal function is nonlinear in congestion management. An EP-based approach is then used to solve the issue of Optimal Power Flow (OPF). It is considered that the IEEE 14 bus system demonstrates the suitability of this algorithm and the results are appreciably strong.
